App Settings
What This Solves
Aelano’s defaults work for most people, but everyone has different study habits, a different native language, and different device preferences. This page walks you through the settings people actually change in global settings — tuning Aelano to fit you is much easier over the long run than forcing yourself to live with the defaults.
Where to Find Settings
Aelano’s bottom navigation bar has a Me tab, and that is the settings page (the exact location varies slightly by platform).
The sections below are ordered roughly by how much you are likely to care.
Appearance
Controls the app’s overall visual theme:
- Follow system (default): light if your phone or computer is set to light, dark if it is dark
- Light: force light mode
- Dark: force dark mode
All of Aelano’s main screens — the player, shadowing, Practice, home, search, purchase — are fully adapted for dark mode. If you often study at night, dark or follow system is the way to go.
Language Settings
“Language” in Aelano is configured along four independent dimensions — this is where a lot of people get confused at first:
| Setting | What it means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| App display language | What language Aelano’s interface is shown in | Chinese / English / Japanese |
| Native language | The language you know best (used as the translation target) | Chinese |
| Learning language | The language you are studying (multiple allowed) | English, Japanese, German |
| AI language | What language AI explanations reply to you in | Usually the same as your native language |
Why four? Because they do completely different things:
- Switching the interface to Japanese is not the same as changing the translation target to Japanese
- Your native language may be Chinese while you still prefer AI explanations in English
- You might study 5 languages but only need one interface language
You will find these under Language, each one selected separately.
Proficiency Level
Set a difficulty level separately for each language you are learning (beginner / intermediate / advanced, and so on).
This affects two things:
- Content recommendations: what the discover page suggests takes your level into account
- How complex AI explanations are: beginners get more basic explanations with more detail; advanced users get more concise ones
If you do not set one, it is treated as “no level set” and AI replies at a fairly neutral level of complexity.
Shadowing Scoring Strictness
In the shadowing stage of Practice (LS100), AI scores your pronunciation. If you find the scoring too strict (marked wrong when you read it correctly) or too lenient (a high score despite an obvious accent problem), you can adjust it:
- Strict: a higher bar, for advanced users chasing precise pronunciation
- Default: the balanced setting
- Lenient: more encouraging, for users who are just starting shadowing and get discouraged easily
Changes take effect on your next shadowing score; scores already given are not recalculated.
Enhanced YouTube Playback
Aelano offers an optional Enhanced YouTube Playback toggle, which replaces the default embedded YouTube player with an enhanced one.
Unless you have a specific reason, leave it off. Turn it on to see whether it helps only when you run into YouTube playback stuttering, errors, or content that will not load.
Proxy Settings
Under Settings → Proxy, you can configure a local HTTP proxy so that Aelano routes through it when importing YouTube, Bilibili, and similar links, and when fetching video information and audio streams.
When You Need It
- You want to import YouTube content on macOS or Windows, but on your default network transcription fails and the video cannot be fetched
- You already run a proxy tool at the system level (Clash, Surge, V2Ray, and so on) and want Aelano to go through the same channel
How to Configure It
The fields are simple:
- Host: usually
127.0.0.1(a proxy on your own machine) - Port: the port your proxy tool listens on (commonly
7890or1080) - Username / Password: optional, only needed if your proxy requires authentication
Once it is set, you can test the connection — it shows whether the connection works and the latency in milliseconds, so you can confirm the proxy is usable.
A Note on Mobile
App proxies on iOS and Android are usually configured at the system level, so Aelano’s own proxy setting is mainly for desktop (macOS / Windows).
Account and Security
This section covers managing your sign-in methods; see Account and cross-device sync for details. Here you can configure:
- Linking and unlinking a phone number
- Linking an Apple, Google, or WeChat account
- Editing your avatar and display name
- Device management (see which devices are signed in to your account)
- Deleting your account
Points
Settings shows your current points — the single unit Aelano uses to measure what AI features consume. It includes:
- Points available
- Total points for the current cycle
- Next reset date (per cycle)
- Membership expiry / renewal date (if you are a member)
See Membership for details.
About
The About section at the bottom contains:

- Privacy policy

A Few Practical Tips
- New users should go through all four language settings first: interface, native language, learning language, AI. Get those four right and nothing later feels off.
- Do not change your native language casually: after you change it, translations for content you already studied are not redone automatically; only new content is translated into the new language.
- Start shadowing scoring on “Default”: a lot of people switch to “Lenient” right away because it feels good, and end up with distorted feedback. Start at default and loosen it only if it genuinely feels too strict.
- Dark mode is easier on the eyes: for long focused study sessions it puts less strain on your eyes, especially at night.
- You can add more than one learning language: Aelano does not limit you to one; you can keep 3–5 running at once. But set a difficulty level for each, so AI can pitch its explanations correctly.
Common Questions
I changed the app display language, so why are translations still in Chinese?
That is expected. Display language and translation target language (native language) are two independent settings. Switching the interface to English does not switch translations to English — you have to change that separately under Native language.
The language I want to learn is not in the learning language list
Aelano’s subtitle transcription supports 100+ languages. If you do not see one in the learning language picker, that language may not be officially available yet in your version. Let us know.
Some pages look odd in dark mode
The main screens are all adapted. If a specific page has odd colors (particularly on systems older than iOS 26, or on some third-party embedded pages), let us know.
Will setting shadowing scoring to “Lenient” make my progress unrealistic?
Yes. Scoring exists to give you honest feedback, and loosening it means asking AI to go easy on you. Use it briefly when you are clearly discouraged, and switch back to default once you have recovered.
Do settings sync with my account?
Yes. Almost all settings — appearance, language, native language, proficiency level, shadowing scoring strictness, and so on — sync with your account across devices. Only a few purely device-specific settings (such as local cache cleanup state) do not.
