Offline Downloads and Local Cache
What This Solves
When you are commuting, traveling, or dealing with an unreliable connection, downloaded content can still play locally. Offline downloads save the media and study information needed by the device, and the player uses the local copy first.
How to Download an Episode
- Open imported or subscribed content and find the download button on the player or content card.
- If the content has multiple video qualities, choose the quality you want to keep. If you only need the speech, choose an audio option when one is available.
- If the content does not yet have a translation in your target language, Aelano asks how to download it:
- Translate and download: generate the needed translation, then save the media and translation together
- Download only: save the existing media and subtitles, and handle translation later when you are online
- Once the download is complete, tap it in your downloads to open the player and listen offline.
Generating a translation uses the relevant points. Downloading a translation that already exists does not generate it again.
What You Can Do While It Downloads
The download button shows the current state:
- Queued: waiting for another task
- Downloading: showing progress, with an option to pause
- Paused: ready to continue later
- Failed: ready to retry
- Completed: opens the local copy
Long-press an active download to cancel it. Waiting tasks continue when the required network becomes available.
Download Only on Wi-Fi
Open My Downloads or Local Cache and turn on Wi-Fi only. When Wi-Fi-only mode is enabled and you start a download on mobile data, Aelano lets you wait for Wi-Fi or download immediately.
The page also shows:
- Downloads grouped by content source
- A separate group for imported content
- The amount of local storage being used
- A button to clear the local cache
Clearing the cache only removes the offline copies on this device. It does not delete cloud content, subscriptions, or study history. You can download the content again later.
What Works Offline
Once a download is complete, you can open it from My Downloads and keep listening without a connection. Saved subtitles and translations use the snapshot captured with the download; new translations or online content updates require a fresh download before they appear in the local copy.
Practical Tips
- Long videos use more storage, so check the used-space value before leaving home.
- Turn on Wi-Fi only to save mobile data, and prefer an audio download when you do not need the video.
- Confirm the target language before choosing Translate and download, so you do not spend points on a translation you do not need yet.
- If a cached item behaves unexpectedly, delete that item from the downloads page and download it again; leaving the player does not delete the cache.
Common Questions
Where do I find completed downloads?
Open My Downloads or Local Cache. Items are grouped by content source, while standalone imports appear under Imported Content.
Does clearing the local cache delete my content?
No. It removes the downloaded files and offline snapshot from this device. Your library entries, subscriptions, and study history remain.
Why does downloading say that I do not have enough points?
You chose Translate and download, and the episode still has untranslated sentences. You can choose Download only, or add points and generate the translation first.
Can I pause a download?
Yes. Tap the download control while it is running to pause, then tap it again to resume. Failed tasks can also be retried.
