The trap language learners fall into most often is this: remembering something is not the same as having learned it. A word feels known the moment you finish looking it up — but will you still recognize it three days later? A week later? Usually the answer is no. Aelano's review system uses spaced repetition to remind you to look again at the right moment — words you just learned come back more often, words you already know come back at longer intervals. In only 5-10 minutes a day, the words, phrases, and sentences you saved in My Words & Sentences move from short-term memory into long-term memory.
Situations this suits:
Open Aelano, and you can see the Review entry in the bottom navigation bar or on the home screen.
Once inside, you see today's summary cards:
The streak is a gentle reminder, not a KPI. Missing a day is fine — just come back and keep going.
The review system is not only about single words — the words, phrases, and sentences you saved in My Words & Sentences all enter the review pool, and each card is labeled with its type:
Each card also carries a small badge:
The front usually shows the word, phrase, or sentence in its original form — your job is to recall what it means. Do not rush to flip it — giving yourself 3-5 seconds to think properly works far better than turning it over right away.
Tap the card to flip to the back, which shows the full information: definition, phonetics, source, and more.
There are three buttons at the bottom:
Once you rate it, the system uses your choice to decide when to show you that card again:
That is the core of spaced repetition — the less familiar a word is, the more often it appears; the more familiar it is, the longer the gap. The whole process is automatic; you never have to schedule anything by hand.
The top shows current / total, so you know how much is left today.
The review system has an advanced mode you can turn on: Practice Test.
Once it is on:
Get it right → you see a correct-answer message and move on to the next card Get it wrong → you are asked to think again and get another try
Practice test mode suits people who want to genuinely remember rather than just recognize. The cost is another 10-30 seconds per card. You can toggle it in the review settings.
Once you have gone through today's cards, you see a Review complete for today summary page:
There is also a small weekly summary showing how many you completed this week, so you can see the running total.
Where do the review cards come from?
Only from My Words & Sentences. Words you never saved there do not enter review.
Why do some words show up so often?
Words you rated Don't know or Unsure get scheduled first — until you can rate them Know it consistently. That is by design in spaced repetition: your effort goes to the content you genuinely have not retained.
Does a word stop appearing once I rate it Know it?
It does not disappear; the interval just gets longer. It may come back days, weeks, or months later to confirm you still remember. That is why spaced repetition builds long-term memory.
Do mastered words still appear in review?
No. Once you mark a word as Mastered in My Words & Sentences, it is removed from the review pool. If one day you find you have forgotten it, mark it back to Not Mastered and it returns to the pool.
How is today's due count calculated?
The spaced repetition algorithm decides it, combining due dates and how many new words there are. The amount fluctuates day to day — if you added a lot of new words yesterday, today's count is higher.
What if I do not have time to finish in one sitting?
You can quit at any time and continue when you come back. Whatever you did not finish stays in today's due list; if the day rolls over, it is merged into the next day.
Does it sync across devices?
Yes. Review progress, intervals, and rating history all sync with your account. A card you went through on your phone will not appear again on your computer.
Does review require a membership?
Basic review is available to all users.
