Aelano's defaults work for most people, but everyone has different study habits, a different native language, and different device preferences. This page walks you through the settings people actually change in global settings — tuning Aelano to fit you is much easier over the long run than forcing yourself to live with the defaults.
Aelano's bottom navigation bar has a Me tab, and that is the settings page (the exact location varies slightly by platform).
The sections below are ordered roughly by how much you are likely to care.
Controls the app's overall visual theme:
All of Aelano's main screens — the player, shadowing, Practice, home, search, purchase — are fully adapted for dark mode. If you often study at night, dark or follow system is the way to go.
"Language" in Aelano is configured along four independent dimensions — this is where a lot of people get confused at first:
| Setting | What it means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| App display language | What language Aelano's interface is shown in | Chinese / English / Japanese |
| Native language | The language you know best (used as the translation target) | Chinese |
| Learning language | The language you are studying (multiple allowed) | English, Japanese, German |
| AI language | What language AI explanations reply to you in | Usually the same as your native language |
Why four? Because they do completely different things:
You will find these under Language, each one selected separately.
Set a difficulty level separately for each language you are learning (beginner / intermediate / advanced, and so on).
This affects two things:
If you do not set one, it is treated as "no level set" and AI replies at a fairly neutral level of complexity.
In the shadowing stage of Practice (LS100), AI scores your pronunciation. If you find the scoring too strict (marked wrong when you read it correctly) or too lenient (a high score despite an obvious accent problem), you can adjust it:
Changes take effect on your next shadowing score; scores already given are not recalculated.
Aelano offers an optional Enhanced YouTube Playback toggle, which replaces the default embedded YouTube player with an enhanced one.
Unless you have a specific reason, leave it off. Turn it on to see whether it helps only when you run into YouTube playback stuttering, errors, or content that will not load.
Under Settings → Proxy, you can configure a local HTTP proxy so that Aelano routes through it when importing YouTube, Bilibili, and similar links, and when fetching video information and audio streams.
The fields are simple:
127.0.0.1 (a proxy on your own machine)7890 or 1080)Once it is set, you can test the connection — it shows whether the connection works and the latency in milliseconds, so you can confirm the proxy is usable.
App proxies on iOS and Android are usually configured at the system level, so Aelano's own proxy setting is mainly for desktop (macOS / Windows).
This section covers managing your sign-in methods; see Account and cross-device sync for details. Here you can configure:
Settings shows your current points — the single unit Aelano uses to measure what AI features consume. It includes:
See Membership for details.
The About section at the bottom contains:
I changed the app display language, so why are translations still in Chinese?
That is expected. Display language and translation target language (native language) are two independent settings. Switching the interface to English does not switch translations to English — you have to change that separately under Native language.
The language I want to learn is not in the learning language list
Aelano's subtitle transcription supports 100+ languages. If you do not see one in the learning language picker, that language may not be officially available yet in your version. Let us know.
Some pages look odd in dark mode
The main screens are all adapted. If a specific page has odd colors (particularly on systems older than iOS 26, or on some third-party embedded pages), let us know.
Will setting shadowing scoring to "Lenient" make my progress unrealistic?
Yes. Scoring exists to give you honest feedback, and loosening it means asking AI to go easy on you. Use it briefly when you are clearly discouraged, and switch back to default once you have recovered.
Do settings sync with my account?
Yes. Almost all settings — appearance, language, native language, proficiency level, shadowing scoring strictness, and so on — sync with your account across devices. Only a few purely device-specific settings (such as local cache cleanup state) do not.
